We are four related families from Iowa, Virginia, Pennsylvania & Martha's Vineyard. We wanted to get together for Christmas '09 & decided a B & B would be our best option. We chose the Mary-Penn....BINGO ! What a fabulous, historic, warm, scenic, spotless, positive energy, private, absolutely beautiful home away from home. As we drove up the long wooded lane, I wondered if we were in the right area. In the distance, with snow covered fields, old growth trees sat an old brick/stone farm house, decorated with a wreath on each window & a metal entrance gate....how inviting. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the owners, Bea & David (great people). I entered the house & was speechless - that is a first in my life. It was so very beautiful, with an original wood staircase straight ahead from the 1700's, old wood floors in fine condition that still creaked. To the right, a dining room with original large deep wood cabinets on either side of a brick fireplace, to my left a sitting room done in Victorian flair with an antique organ & documents displayed related to the home's history. A full kitchen with ANYTHING you could possible need at hand. Upstairs there are three bedrooms - one bedroom downstairs, each in a different flavor. One bedroom has a little spin-off room with original blue paint-made from berries & milk-from the 1700's perfect for my grandson (1 yr old). One bedroom has a canopy bed, all have lovely furniture. The feel of this home is so nice & comfortable and is filled with antiques and interesting objects from long ago. We all wanted to stay there forever ! Recently the owners attached a large family room to the rear of the house, with a big screen TV & many large windows overlooking a meandering stream with trees at waters edge, deer resting & beavers swimming about. This property is an artist's dream. The basement (once slave quarters) is very interesting, huge fireplace used for cooking, original hand hewed beams still covered with soot, and very spacious with a large dining table. The grounds are very scenic. There are no other homes to be seen from this property. It is a very tranquil atmosphere, good for the spirit. Major fusspot I am, very observant, detail oriented. I could not find one thing to complain about. We will stay at this B & B in the future. It is a marvelous experience and takes you back to a time that is no more. -Maria Bryk
